Graphics cards are very productive things, they are literally stuffed with computing processors. The architecture on which GPUs are built is designed to perform a huge number of operations simultaneously, or in parallel. For example, they are used in training neural networks, processing ML-models, rendering frames for VR-headset, creating video films.

These calculations are specific and require their own protocols and directives for optimal performance. This is how video card drivers adapted to specific tasks came about. For example, drivers specifically optimized for mining, but only at AMD, Nvidia created a separate mode “Optimize for Computing” in the control panel of the video card.

According to the legend, the video card will be able to work with neural network models with regular drivers, but it is still better to screw in screws with a screwdriver.

Drivers for mining on AMD graphics cards: download and install

AMD’s mining driver is called ReLive for Blockchain Compute and is designed for “Blockchain Computing”. AMD has specifically optimized these drivers for mining.

By the time Ether mining began in 2015, the cards from Red were the cheapest and most productive when compared to Green. The company responded to this and created special drivers in 2021. The name was uncomplicated “ReLive for Blockchain Compute”.

Blockchain drivers have long been included in major Radeon Software builds.

The mining driver was created as an experimental version of Re-Live. The main version is designed for fast gameplay and image rendering for VR glasses. The ReLive for Blockchain driver set was developed until 2021, then its components were included in the regular Adrenaline Edition.

No special drivers are needed for mining.

This was relevant in 2017-2018, in 2021 the drivers are built with mining needs in mind. To mine cryptocurrency in 2021, Adrenalin Software provides “Compute Mode”. Below we will tell you how to activate it.

Seven simple steps to install an AMD driver when building a farm

  • Step 1:
    open the user support page on the AMD website.

. If you are using a board with an AMD chipset, you will not need to download a separate driver package. The driver installer will detect the native hardware and download drivers for the chipset and PCI controllers by itself. For Intell chipset-based boards, the drivers for the motherboard are installed separately.

What is Compute Mode in AMD cards and how to enable it

This is the mode for advanced computations, such as when maps are used to model protein molecules or predict weather conditions.

In our case, we will use the card for mining.

  1. You need to have Radeon Software installed on the farm.
  2. Open the Radeon Software panel.
  3. Find the gear on the panel, press it.
  4. Open the “Graphics” section, if the program is in Russian, select the “Graphics” section, scroll down and click “Advanced”.
  5. Scroll down to the “GPU workload” section, click on “Graphics card” and select “Calculate”. Reboot the computer.

After rebooting, the video card will be in computation mode and ready to use its full potential for mining.

If your hash rate drops on RX 400 or RX 500 series graphics cards, turn on Compute Mode.

Turn off auto-refresh so you don’t have to run after the farm.

Before you start mining, turn off the automatic driver installation so that it interrupts the mining. Go to the “System” tab and click the radio button next to “Check for updates”.

Compute mode can be enabled on all video cards at once.

Laziness is the engine of progress. Therefore, a special utility was created by enthusiastic miners, which enables the calculation mode on all connected AMD video cards.

Using AMD-Compute Switcher

  • Run AMD-Compute-Switcher.exe.
  • If the window says “switch to compute mode”, press “Ok” to switch to compute mode.

Reflashing the graphics card bios.

AMD driver installation errors and their solutions

Even an insurance policy with a monthly premium does not protect against mistakes.

But there should be no errors if you use a relatively “modern” graphics card such as the RX 400 or RX 500. Errors will occur when a video card younger than the HD 7700 is installed in your computer. This is officially “Old” hardware which is not supported in the new driver sets.

How do I install drivers on my old video card?

Use SDI. The program searches among the available databases of software for video cards that no longer receive official updates. [official website of the software developer].

We recommend using SDI Lite if the farm has online access. For a farm without network access, download SDI Full.

How to resolve driver installation errors

  • Reset the overclocked graphics card to factory settings and repeat the installation.
  • Update the MS Visual Basic library [link to library set from 2005 to 2021].
  • Disable the antivirus and try the installation again.
  • Use the DDU utility to completely remove the video drivers and repeat the installation procedure. [link to utility]
  • Use the official driver from the video card manufacturer’s website.
  • Remove old drivers via AMDCleanupUtility.exe [link to utility page on AMD web site]

These are solutions to the most common driver installation problems. If the case is unique, it should be described in detail and googled. Similar questions could have been asked on the forums 2 or 3 years ago and found a solution.

Build Windows 10 is a friend for mining.

To avoid problems with drivers, it is recommended to use the LTSC build of Windows 10 and its variations, e.g. by LeX_6000 or Ovgorsky. LTSC is the branch of Windows that gets the most stable and tested updates and is designed for corporate customers. Automatic updates and spyware modules that could interfere with the farm have been removed.

Sites that provide up-to-date versions of cryptocurrency mining software

It is recommended to use only the latest versions of licensed software published by video card manufacturers. Installing trial releases of drivers is fraught with unstable GPU operation, overheating and failure of the whole farm.

Applications should be downloaded from one of the following sites:

  1. Owners of AMD video cards can download the utility from the manufacturer’s official web page. Search by device type and model, then choose the appropriate version of Winodws or other OS. The program is available in extended (Optional) and standard modifications.
  2. Similarly to AMD, NVIDIA’s site is searchable based on technical specifications, and there is a Russian-language localization of the web page. The software is compatible with Windows, Linux, Solaris or FeeBSD.

For security reasons, you should first uninstall the existing version via the Device Manager application. The current driver modification allows you to analyze the statistics and profitability of mining with the help of the mining client program.

AMD driver patch: where to download and how to use

Suppose you have modified the BIOS of your video card and the drivers for it stop working or give errors. For example, error 43.

This is software that convinces the drivers and the system that the video card is not a bastard and can work. After modifying the BIOS of the video card, run the utility, and run the patching procedure. []

Mining drivers from Nvidia

Nvidia has not even tried to release separate drivers for mining – their cards are designed with professional workloads in mind. For example, Nvidia cards are used to make aerodynamic weather models.

Nvidia does not need special drivers for mining, neither does AMD

By default, Nvidia hardware is built for workloads: scene rendering, computing, rendering protein molecules, neural networks, etc. Since mining is math, the drivers from green already include everything you need.

GeForce has long been able to “Compute” mode on video cards, by default

The principle of operation is the same as for AMD – the video card uses all its power to solve mathematical problems. However, we are talking about permanently enabled computing mode. There is no need to switch a separate checkbox.

Before you start installing the drivers, you should understand that the material covers GTX and RTX video cards of the 10th, 20th and 30th ranges. Older video cards like the 900s or 700s are not suitable for mining.

Calculation of mining profitability

With a clearer understanding of the Ethereum blockchain and important concepts such as complexity, it is time to do some economic calculations. This step is very important and you should not skip it.

Complexity, ETH / BTC rate: these fields are updated automatically. You can enter your own values manually to simulate scenarios.

Hash rate and power consumption: use this table to find the parameters according to the make and model of your video card. Make sure that the hash rate measurement in the table and the calculator are the same, i.e. MH/s, KH/s, etc.

Pool fee (optional): enter the mining fee if you are mining through a mining pool (usually about 1% plus payout fee). Leave this field blank if you are mining solo (not recommended)

Cost of equipment. Enter here (in dollars) how much you have paid (or are going to pay) for your video cards and any other mining equipment.

Electricity cost: Enter the price of electricity as it appears on the utility bill.

The result of profitability will appear under the calculator when you enter values.

Remember that depending on your intended farm, you may need to buy a new power supply to run your equipment. An efficient power supply costs more, but saves energy costs in the long run.

Most importantly, and what is important to understand, is that complexity and price are variables, meaning that they can and probably will change significantly over time.

The profitability figure you get is correct only at the time of calculation.

Ethereum is scheduled to switch to the Proof of Stake model on an unspecified date, which means the coin will no longer be mined.

Another important thing to consider is that over time, Ethereum developers make changes to the network that affect mining profits. For example, during the hard fork of Ethereum “Constantinople,” the reward per block was reduced from 3 ETH to 2.

Further research into the prospects of Etherium is needed before any serious expenditures are made. In the meantime, video cards can easily be configured to mine other coins of the Etherium algorithm (Ethash).

How to properly install an Nvidia driver for GTX graphics cards

  • Step 1: Open the [Auto Install Drivers page via the GeForce panel].
  • Step 2: Click the green “Download Now” button
  • Step 3: Run the downloaded installer
  • Step 4: Click “Next” and uncheck the boxes next to “Bing” or “Make xxx your default search system”.
  • Step 5: Wait for the installation to finish, restart the computer.

No other action is required.

Nvidia used to have compute mode, but only for older graphics cards

The mode was used by Maxwell chips – 900 series graphics cards and only. The new versions of the drivers for the 10th generation graphics cards and above do not have such a mode. The drivers from Green provide for using the card for computing. Mining is computing.

To quote Nvidia themselves

: “This option is intended to provide additional performance for non-gaming applications that use CUDA cores on second-generation Maxwell GPUs. Graphics cards based on other architectures do not use this setting.

New video cards like Nvidia’s 10s, 20s and 30s don’t have compute mode anymore.

It was removed for lack of use, as modern drivers are sharpened to work with calculations and games simultaneously.

What errors can occur when installing an Nvidia driver and how to solve them

Before installing drivers, traditionally disable antivirus and turn off everything but the installer. This solves 70% of the problems before they occur.

Errors occurring on a fresh build are a sign of hardware problems.

After installing the OS, the computer is in a “raw” configuration. When problems occur during driver installation, it indicates that there is a problem with the graphics card.

Before reinstalling, you must remove traces of previous drivers via DDU.

Previously installed, they leave behind residual traces, tails. These parts slow down the system or cause errors if the OS addresses them. Sometimes, when you install drivers, the video card does not work properly. This situation is typical when the computer had other drivers before.

How to overclock a video card when mining Etherium

An important point: when overclocking and testing, always keep an eye on the temperature of the graphics card. When safely mining Ether, the core temperature should not rise above 65 degrees. Higher temperatures are at your own risk.

The basic configuration of graphics cards for Ether is quite simple.

  1. First of all, we determine the maximum frequency at which the memory will work, in increments of +25 MHz. We find the one at which the video card driver starts to crash – i.e. reboot – and step 50 MHz down into the stable area.
  2. find the core voltage at which we are satisfied with the power consumption of the card. The lower the voltage, the less the card “eats”, but the lower the maximum speed. The dependence is disproportionate, because usually when you reduce the consumption by 20-25% of the nominal, the speed drops only by 10-15%.
  3. find the maximum stable core frequency (also at +25 MHz) and step down from it 25 MHz.

A finer tuning will give us 2-6% extra speed or 2-4% energy efficiency. We will not elaborate on it in this article.

The above instructions are good for AMD video cards. For Nvidia video cards, setting up high performance mining is a bit more complicated, so let’s focus on each series separately.

Mining with Nvidia on Windows (P2 and P0 modes)

The important point when working with Nvidia cards running Windows is that initially the memory of video cards at normal frequencies allow a small number of errors, which are not critical for rendering images in games, but can be critical for accurate calculations. Therefore, to run CUDA systems, Nvidia engineers provided a special mode with reduced memory frequency (P2).

The transition of cards to this mode is automatic, but miners often want to get the maximum hash rate and seriously increase the memory frequency to values of +700, +1000 or even higher. As a result, two factors are added up – frequency reduction by P2 mode and increase by the miner. In this case, the miner works successfully, but when you turn off the miner mode P2 is switched back, and the plus frequency manually set remains. This leads to frequencies that the card can not hold and as a consequence – the driver crashes when shutting down or restarting the mining program.

Important: changing P2 to P0 does not increase the maximum speed, but only increases the stability when turning on/off/restarting the miner.

The correct way is to disable the P2 mode for CUDA – this is done through the nvInspector utility, or rather its nvProfileInspector subroutine. Find the CUDA parameter – Force P2 state, turn it off, then start the miner.

Another important point: the Force P2 state parameter is restored when any new Nvidia card is installed in the system, don’t forget to double-check it.

Ether mining on Pascal architecture (GTX 10xx series)

Unfortunately, the 10xx series cards were not designed specifically for mining, so at the end of 2021, the 10xx series miners faced some drop in speed when mining Ether. In order to maintain the speed, they had to raise the power consumption, which significantly changed the energy efficiency.

Important: On the Nvidia GTX 10xx series, the power consumption of graphics cards will increase slightly up to the maximum video card power limit with each next Etherium epoch – and they change every four days. In roughly 1.5 years the cards will start to hit the power limit.

Note that Nvidia decided not to update the Nvidia driver for 10xxx cards for Windows 7 system, so it is impossible to effectively mine Ether on 10xxx video cards on this system (16xxx, 20xxx and 30xxx video cards do not have this problem anymore). To mine Ether on 10xxx series, use Windows 10 or Rave OS.

Overclocking of Etherium mining on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB), 1070 and 1070ti

These cards work on the type of memory GDDR5, the overclocking algorithm for them is the same.

  1. Turn on the miner without overclocking. Slowly increase memory frequency (+50 MHz). Find the frequency, at which the video card driver starts to crash – restart – and step 50 MHz down into the stable area.
  2. start decreasing the PL a little bit, about 1% at a time. The video card will start to consume less, and the temperature will decrease, at some point the speed will start to drop. Stop at 5% speed drop.
  3. raise a little bit the frequency of the core, find the frequency at which the video card driver starts to crash, and step back from it 25 MHz down into the stable area.

The speed lost in point 2 should be fully returned. If it is not completely back, you can slightly increase the Power Limit, but the power consumption of the card will also increase.

Etherium mining on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and 1080ti

The 1080 and 1080ti cards have high-timing fast GDDR5X memory, which initially lost significantly to GDDR5 memory when mining Ether. However, rather quickly the ETHlargementPill-r2 tablet was released, lowering the timings for this type of memory, after which they became very efficient for Ether.

The tablet makes memory operation less stable and reduces possible overclocking maximum. For many early revisions of GTX 1080 (Rev.A) cards the tablet is already unstable at standard frequencies, so for stable operation of such cards the memory frequency of the video card has to be lowered.

If even lowering the frequency did not result in stable operation of the miner program, a soft counterpart should be used for such cards instead of the tablet. This is the -mt parameter in the t-rex miner, which varies from 0 to 6. The higher this parameter, the more aggressive the reduction of timings – but also the lower the stability.

After successfully activating the tablet or selecting the -mt parameter, the overclocking of these cards is similar to the 1060 and 1070 cards.

Ethereum mining on Nvidia GeForce GTX 16xx and 20xx

These cards have no problem placing large amounts of data in graphics card memory and at the same time have very powerful cores.

The algorithm for overclocking is very simple:

  1. Reduce the PL to a minimum.
  2. Slowly increase memory frequency (+50 MHz). Find the frequency at which the video card driver starts to crash and step 50 MHz down from it to the stable area.
  3. Check that increasing PL does not increase the hash rate.

If increasing the PL increases the hash rate – this is relevant for some 2080 and 2080ti models – then find to what hash rate you can raise the PL. Then do the following steps.

  • Start lowering the PL a little at a time, about 1% at a time. As a result, the video card will start to consume less, and the temperature will decrease, and at some point the speed will start to drop. Stop at 5% speed drop.
  • Raise a little bit the frequency of the core, find the frequency at which the video card driver starts to fly off and step back from it 25 MHz down into the stable area.

The speed lost in point 2 should fully return. If it is not completely back, you can slightly increase the Power Limit, but the power consumption of the card will also increase.

ETH mining on Nvidia GeForce RTX 30xx

The 3070, 3080 and 3090 cards are the most capricious of all NVIDIA cards in terms of overclocking, let’s focus on them in detail. Let’s note right away that overclocking of 3060 and 3060ti is similar to overclocking of 20xx series.

Etherium mining on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070

When overclocking the 3070 – as well as all high end cards of the 30xx series – it is important to feel what the card is missing. The card is stable at 60 MH/s, with memory overclocking you can steadily get 63-64 MH/s. The card has a very powerful core, not really needed for ether mining: 700-800 MHz is enough for it. Therefore, the voracity of the card can and should be safely limited.

Overclocking the 3070 is not complicated: first of all we overclock the memory to the stable maximum, then we reduce the PL.

  1. Slowly increase memory frequency (+50 MHz). Find the frequency at which the video card driver starts crashing and step 50 MHz down to the stable area. The final effective memory frequency according to MSI Afterburner should be 8100-8400 MHz.
  2. Start decreasing PL by 1%, the video card will start to consume less and the temperature will decrease. At some point the speed will start to drop, bring it back to plus or minus a couple of percent.

At some point when the PL is lowered, the core frequency may start to “jump”, periodically dropping below 1 GHz and then coming back after a second. This means that the card does not have enough power limit.

This effect is called “trotling” (from the English verb “to slow down”). Important point: t-rex miners and others may show high speed, but the effective speed will be 4-5 MH/s lower than the displayed speed.

When the card heats up and fans are overclocked, it is necessary to slightly increase PL, because with Nvidia cards fan consumption is also taken into account in PL, and the card core may start to lack the remaining energy. This is due to the fact that Nvidia cards also count fan consumption in PL and the card core may start to run short of remaining power

Conclusion: Do not overclock the PL. Normal consumption of the 3070 when mining is 130 watts at 63 MH/s speed.

The best results can be obtained on Windows 7 when fixing the core voltage around 713-725 mV and lowering the core frequency. On good memory we get 121W consumption at 64.6 MH/s speed. This is t-rex excluding devfee.

If you use mode locking in nvidia inspector (command -forcePState:0,0), then you can get 61 MH/s at 107 W or 570 MH/s at 1kW power consumption. But in this case, after reboot you will have to restore the mode first, and only then turn on mining, otherwise the driver will be cyclically flipped. In this case, saving 10 watts from the card is not reasonable.

Etherium mining on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080

When overclocking the 3080 – as well as all the older 30xx series cards – it is important to feel what the card is missing. The 3080 card has a very powerful core, which is excessive for ether mining, so first of all we limit the core as much as possible – without trotling – and then we overclock the memory.

Overclocking on Windows

  1. Reduce memory frequency to the minimum. Using MSI Afterburner, fix core voltage at 750 mV, save, check memory frequency. It should be around 7500 MHz.
  2. Start recording voltages at the lower points (743 mV – 725 mV – 713 mV – 700 mV). Look for the point at which memory frequency drops to 5000 MHz (P3 mode), step up 1 step from this point. Make sure the memory frequency is above 7000 MHz again.
  3. Reduce the core to a minimum. Turning on mining.
  4. Slowly raising the memory frequency by +50 MHz.

The next two options are.

  1. Or find the frequency at which the video card driver starts to crash and step back from it 50 MHz down into the stable area.
    After that, you can slightly add the core and check that the speed does not increase. If the speed increases – then add the core, the main thing is not to reach the next option.
  2. Find the point after which the core begins to “jump” and fall below 1 GHz. Alas, we have a card with a weak power supply, we stop at this point and settle for the current speed above 90 MH/s.

Ether mining on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090

The principle of overclocking the 3090 is not different from the 3080, you just have to assume that the 3090 behaves like an overclocked 3080 with a weak power supply.

Step 4: Choose a mining pool.

The realities are that the days when Bitcoin and Ethereum were easy to dig in alone on a CPU or video card are gone. The complexity has gotten to the point where you have to combine your cryptocurrency mining efforts on a pool.

In the context of cryptocurrency mining, mining is the pooling of the resources of people who share their computing power across the network to share the reward equally, based on the amount of work they have contributed in proportion to the likelihood of finding a block.

So, you need to choose a pool. For now, we recommend that you just choose the pool that has the most power:

How to enable calculation mode

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select “Radeon Settings”.
  2. Click the gear icon in the upper right corner of the application window.
  3. Go to the “Graphics” tab and scroll down to the “Advanced” section.
  4. Select “Compute Mode” (or “compute” in the Russian version) from the GPU drop-down list.
  5. Reboot your PC. Now your GPU is ready to mine at full power.

At first, we conducted a test using a mining rig based on 5 Sapphire Nitro+ RX 470 4GB video cards in Ethereum minnig, Ethereum + SiaCoin dual minnig and Ethereum + Decred dual minnig modes, where we compared the performance of the previous driver version and the new beta driver. As a result, the rig’s hash rate in Ethereum mining mode managed to increase from 135 MHS to 147 MHS (+8.8%). The performance in dual modes has also improved dramatically. Therefore, it is safe to say that there is no loss of performance due to the growth of DAG epochs on Polaris series graphics cards. Also, during testing we noticed that GPU consumption in all modes has slightly decreased. Note that we used the same frequencies, DCRI, and undervolting in the test.

At the end we tested the new driver on another mining rig with 4 Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 4GB video cards. Many of you complained that RX500 series GPUs had quite high power consumption and heat dissipation, we encountered the same problems. Regardless of what programs we used to underwatch (Beta MSI afterburner, Trixx,WattTool), the power consumption remained quite high. In the end, we managed to reduce the consumption from the driver settings to 130-140 W per card in dual mining. Before we managed to underwrite, mining rig with 4 Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 4GB video cards consumed as much as 900+ W.


The problem with RX 550 graphics cards is that their performance allows them to operate on the brink of break-even. Changes in the price of ether or the difficulty of mining it will lead to the fact that the farm will work at a loss. Switching it to mining a simpler but less profitable currency will not work – mining Monero on RX 550 brings one and a half times less profit than Ethereum. The situation with other currencies is even worse.

So it is worth to make a farm on RX 550 only if video cards are already available. Otherwise it is better to invest in faster and more promising hardware.
