Trezor and bitcoin gold

Date:

Bitcoin Gold is a fork of Bitcoin that was created on October 24, 2016, at around 6am UTC (around November 1, 21:47 GMT). If you kept bitcoins on TREZOR before this block, your bitcoin gold balance will be the same as your bitcoin balance.

Is it true that the Trezor and Bitcoin Gold support each other?

Yes, Bitcoin Gold will be supported by TREZOR (the device). After the mainnet of BTG goes live, if you had bitcoins on your TREZOR at the time of the fork (block height 491407), you will receive bitcoin gold on your TREZOR. Bitcoin gold is accessible to both new and legacy accounts. There is no need to create a new account or a new seed.

Is Bitcoin Gold compatible with the TREZOR Wallet?

Support for Bitcoin Gold has been added. The Bitcoin Gold claim tool is now available.

Replay protection was implemented to Trezor and Bitcoin Gold

What is replay protection, and why is it important?

A replay attack is when a transaction on the Bitcoin Gold chain is re-transmitted on the Bitcoin chain and vice versa. The format, signatures, and so on are identical between Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin. A transaction from one chain may be copied to the other, resulting in an invalidity that might lead to unintended loss of money.

In other words, if BTG does not have replay protection, spending on one chain will cause you to send the same amount of coins on the other chain. Even after the fork, spending BTC can lead to loss of BTG and vice versa.

Furthermore, the absence of replay protection prevents us from developing a simple one-click tool for coin splitting, such as the one we created for Bitcoin Cash.

I need access to BTG immediately, how do I do that?

You can access your Bitcoin Gold wallet in the TREZOR Wallet application.

To obtain bitcoin gold, you must first import your seed into a third-party wallet (not recommended; high risk). Alternatively, you may use a third-party wallet that supports TREZOR hardware and does not require the use of a seed. Sending bitcoins to a third-party wallet in order to be credited with bitcoin gold after the fork is not recommended. There is a possibility that your bitcoins may be lost or stolen.

However, we must inform you that this might be harmful for the following reasons:

  1. If you use replay protection, however, your bitcoin gold is only a variation of bitcoin that can be copied. If you send your bitcoins when you use the same private key to access both funds, they will be lost forever.
  2. All of your coins, including other altcoins, may be stolen if you import them into a malicious wallet.
  3. By importing your seed into a third-party wallet, you are endangering the security of your seed and therefore your TREZOR.

TREZOR Wallet support Bitcoin Gold

We will do everything in our power to provide support for Bitcoin Gold, but we will not do so unless it is safe. As a result, we must first see replay protection built into the code of Bitcoin Gold. We will most likely not be prepared for the debut day of Bitcoin Gold since the coding work began so late.

We’ve been putting pressure on the team and making our needs clear on Twitter and GitHub, so we’re hoping that replay protection becomes a reality.
